Erectile Dysfunction and Treatment

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex. ED is very common affecting 30 million men in the United States. If the problem persists, it can often cause relationship issues. You are more likely to develop ED issues as you age, if you have certain diseases, take certain medications, have certain health related issues or have psychological or emotional issues.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

If you have any issues with ED, its a good time to make an appointment with a urologist. During your initial exam, your urologist will go over your medical history and your symptoms to decide which treatment will work best for you. There are many treatment options that include medication, counseling and surgery.

Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

Talk to your doctor about which treatment is right for you. In some cases, two or more treatments may be appropriate. At Bozeman Health Urology, we create individually tailored treatment plans for each patient.

Your doctor may create a lifestyle modification plan to help you with your ED.

  • Quit smoking
  • Limit or stop drinking alcohol
  • Increase physical exercise and maintain a healthy weight
  • Stop using illegal drugs
Sometimes the source of your ED is psychological or emotional issues that cause anxiety during sexual intercourse. Your doctor might refer you to a mental health professional that can help you reduce your anxiety. These sessions might involve your partner in order to give them the tools to support you.
Your doctor may prescribe medications such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn) or avanafil (Stendra). These medications work by relaxing the smooth muscles to increase blood flow. It’s important to note that these medications can not be taken if you are taking nitrates to treat a heart condition.
Surgery should be the last resort for some men. The most common surgery is inflatable implants known as a prostheses. These implants work by making the penis longer and wider with the use of a pump inside the scrotum. You are usually able to leave the hospital the day of or the day after the surgery. Recovery takes 4-6 weeks to fully heal and be able to use the device.
